The snow sports resort of Zermatt - Matterhorn is one of the places you simply must have seen at least once in your life. Breath-taking Alpine panorama and 360 km of pistes attract ski fans, bon vivants and Alpinists.

The most proficient mountaineers even climb the Matterhorn (4,478 metres above sea level) in winter. The story of the first man to reach the peak in 1865, Edward Whymper, makes fascinating reading.

Zermatt is easy to reach. The train takes visitors directly to the heart of the Alpine village, which has always been car-free. Popular modes of transport are walking, riding horse carriages and taking the electric taxis, which transport passengers and their luggage through the narrow alleyways.

The village at the foot of the Matterhorn issurrounded by magnificent Alpine landscape. Covered in snow at 1,620 metres (the level of the train station), the village looks like something out of a fairy-tale. 360 kilometres of pistes, situated at heights between 1,620 and 3,883 metres both in Switzerland and in Italy, offer limitless and borderless skiing opportunities. 70 per cent of the slopes are on the glacier or can be snowed. Then there is Zermatt’s Snow Park, an absolute must for freestylers and snowboarders. After a good romp on the snow, sport aficionados can visit one of Zermatt’s legendary mountain

restaurants, of which there are more than 50, relax on the sun terrace and enjoy the breathtaking mountain panorama.

ONCE ZERMATT – ALWAYS ZERMATT

Excellent food and drink is also served in the village restaurants and hotels: 18 restaurants have been awarded a total of 255 points by the popular Swiss GaultMillau restaurant guide. Over 70 per cent of Zermatt’s hotels and restaurants are family-run, upholding old traditions and offering their guests, up to 80 per cent of which are long-term regulars, excellent service. Both new hotels and those with a long history are fitted out to the highest standards.

Visitors who have had enough sports and relaxation can take a stroll along Bahnhofstrasse with its numerous brand-name shops. In the evening, guests mingle with locals in the many bars and clubs.
