The Castle Trakošćan consists of the Castle, the additional buildings, a park and a forest park with a lake.
Today's appearance of the Castle Trakošćan has been preceded by numerous reconstructions: it is considered that the oldest layers of the Castle date back to the 13th century
when it was a smaller fortress, often changing masters during the Middle Ages. In the second half of the 16th century, the Drašković family becomes the owner of the Castle and keeps it until
1945. Its role over the centuries had the fortifying purpose: it was extended at the end of the 16th century when it was adapted to the defense from firearms. With the weakening of the war
risk, the fortress loses its defensive role and starts to deteriorate. In the mid- 19th century, after the transformation in historical style, the Castle obtains residential character, and
its surroundings are converted into a park.
The forest around the lake and the landscaped area of the park are protected and preserved parts of the once large estate of the Counts Drašković that form a historical and natural whole. The
park-forest is rich in diverse flora and fauna: the abundant vegetation together with the lake forms a harmonious horticultural environment. In the second half of the 19th
century, the immediate surroundings of the Castle were landscaped and it was created a romantic park that mimics the nature and gives an appearance of the spontaneity in the organization of
the environment. In that period was as well created the Lake Trakošćan with a dual function - economic, as a fishpond, and aesthetic, as a decorative element common in the romantic
park architecture. In the immediate vicinity of the Castle is located the St. Cross Chapel built by Counts Drašković in the mid- 18th century, still in function and with a
well-equipped interior.
Today, it is not only an architectural monument and a museum, but also a natural monument and a monument of park culture, as well as an economic and countryside whole of cultural and historic
importance for Croatia.
Trakošćan offers a unique and comprehensive experience, and its continuity manifested through preserved museum objects, historically closely related to the life of its owners
and placed in an original ambience in harmony with the preserved park, distinguishes Takošćan from other destinations.
